's election day. and the polls here in california just opened about 55 second ago. the months of campaigning the millions of dollars spent on ads comes down to this day. the presidential race remains a dead heat with the latest poll showing president obama and mitt romney still neck in neck in the all important battleground states. mitt romney voted this morning near his boston area home with his wife. romney is now heading to ohio and then pennsylvania where he is making last-minute campaign appearances. this was just announced yesterday before heading back to boston this evening. president obama is back home in chicago where he will watch the results come in later this evening. coming up at 7:15, we will have a guide to the key returns today and when we could know the results of the presidential election. >> time 7:01 you heard tori the polls opened moments ago here in california. we have reporters all over the bay area covering today's local, state and national issues. you see the reporters there tara and everybody else we will start with ktvu's at polling place in san jose good morning.

in california have already cast their ballots in advance of the general election on tuesday. there has been early voting with voters streaming and. in addition, at the alameda office of the registrar many have been received by the mail. >> certainly convenient it might not be a road on tuesday. it is perhaps too late to mail id and so is it is easier to avoid the congestion that the polls. it is more streamlined. >> early voting is also great by mail. we have been able to mail out for a good 40,000 by ballot. we have already received 2000 of those back. with just a couple of days to go it is a good, large percentage of our voting population >> for those people have not used an absentee ballot those must be taken to a polling place. them with just three days and several initiatives on the california ballot it could come down to undecided voters. dan kerman has the latest on proposition 34. if that would pass to be propelling the death penalty. >> death row could shut its doors for good. the new field poll shows of the majority of californians favor proposition 34 which would repeal the death

at the two storms. this first one will continue to go across the californias, we move through the afternoon. we are going to see a bit of a break, maybe a bit of sun and then for the second half this system will start to pull in. let me show you what i'm talking about. scattered shower this morning. expect the slick roads, by noontime we have mainly cloud conditions but we are mainly dry. we have the break, we have rain and snow at the sierra but the elevation very high with the snow above 7,000 feet. by sunset, 5:00 we have the rain pulling in once again. this is the second system moving in to the north bay. if you have evening plans it's going to be wet. over the central bay by 7:00 and in to the south bay by 10. in the overnight it starts to push out. tomorrow morning, sunday 8:00. mainly dry and sunday will be cooler than today but we will be again mainly dry for sunday. the winds right now 14 miles an hour in oakland. 16 in san jose. temperatures, mild. relatively speaking. we are have upper 50s, low 60s outside outside the door right now. 60 degrees for mountain view. 57 santa rose
